Becoming Mayor of Muskogee (2008–2012)

On election night, April 1, Hammons won the most votes. He got 42% of the votes. Another candidate, Herschel McBride, came in second with 38%. The other candidates shared the rest of the votes.
Because no one got more than half of the votes, Hammons and McBride had to have a second election. This is called a runoff election. On May 13, Hammons won the runoff election with 70% of the votes. This was the most votes any candidate had ever received in Muskogee's history. It was also the biggest win in Muskogee County history. On May 19, 2008, Hammons officially became the 47th Mayor of Muskogee. He was also the youngest mayor the city had ever had.
On November 30, 2009, Hammons announced he would run for mayor again. He had three opponents. On April 6, 2010, Hammons easily won his second two-year term. He received just over 51% of the votes. He won by a lot, beating his closest opponent by 20 percentage points. Hammons won in 17 out of the city's 18 voting areas.

Before, everyone in the city voted for all council members. Hammons changed it so that voters only chose the council member for their specific area. In his last speech as mayor in February 2012, Hammons talked about his main achievements. These included getting money for economic growth, improving roads, and promoting tourism. Bob Coburn, who ran against Hammons in 2010, was elected to be the next mayor.
