Early Life and Education
Jazmin Sawyers was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Her father is from Jamaica, and her mother is English. Her mother later became a very important police officer in Staffordshire.
Jazmin started as a gymnast when she was just four years old. At age ten, she began trying out different athletics events at school. She soon decided to focus on these sports.
Jazmin went to Bristol University where she studied law. She successfully completed her degree.
Athletics Journey
When Jazmin was part of the City of Stoke Athletics Club, she mainly focused on high jump and long jump. In 2007, she was the runner-up in the high jump at the English Schools Championships. The next year, she won the English Schools' titles in both the long jump and the pentathlon. She repeated this amazing achievement in 2009. In 2010, she received a scholarship to study at Millfield public school.
Junior Successes
Jazmin first competed internationally in 2011. At the World Youth Championships, she finished ninth in the heptathlon. That year, she jumped over six meters in the long jump for the first time. She then won a gold medal in the long jump at the Commonwealth Youth Games. She also won gold in the 4 × 100 metres relay with the England team at that event.
In early 2012, Jazmin trained for bobsleigh, which meant she wasn't fully ready for heptathlon in the summer. So, she decided to focus on the long jump. This worked well because the strength training for bobsleigh helped her with explosive jumps. She set a new personal best of 6.64 meters and won bronze at the World Junior Championships. Her jump of 6.67 meters was one of the best junior jumps that year.
Jazmin later studied at the University of Sheffield and trained with coach Toni Minichiello. She continued to focus on the long jump in 2013. She was runner-up at university championships both indoors and outdoors. She also took silver medals at the UK Championships and the European Junior Championships. After the season, she won her first competition abroad in Austria. She then moved to Bristol University to study law and criminology. She trained near the University of Bath with coach Alan Lerwill.
Commonwealth Silver Medal
In 2014, Jazmin set an indoor best of 6.44 meters at the British Indoor Championships. She won several competitions outdoors before the European Team Championships. At the National Championships, she was second in the long jump. Both she and another top English athlete were chosen for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
At the Commonwealth Games, Jazmin's final jump of 6.54 meters was her best of the season. This amazing jump earned her a silver medal! It was her first international senior medal, and she was only two centimeters behind the winner.

In 2011, Jazmin was asked by the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association to train for the first-ever Youth Winter Olympics. She became a brakewoman and teamed up with Mica McNeill in a two-man bob team. In January 2012, they represented Great Britain at the Winter Youth Olympics. Jazmin and Mica made history by becoming the first British team to win a medal at this competition, taking home the silver! Because of this, Jazmin was chosen to carry the 2012 Olympic torch.
