Jean Beauvoir's Early Life and Music Journey
Jean Beauvoir was born in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were from Haiti. When he was a child, he played the drums. As a teenager, he switched to playing the bass guitar.
At just 14 years old, he became the musical director for the singer Gary U.S. Bonds. After this, he sang in a doo wop group called The Flamingos. These early experiences helped him learn a lot about performing. He toured the United States, playing at concerts organized by Dick Clark.
When he was 15, his father asked him to leave home because Jean wanted to be a professional musician. Jean lived with band members for a while, then on his own.
Joining The Plasmatics and Other Bands
Jean moved to New York City during the exciting time of punk rock music. He saw an advertisement in a newspaper looking for a bass player. This led him to join the punk band The Plasmatics. He played on three of their albums. While with The Plasmatics, and even after, Jean was famous for his bright blond mohawk.
After The Plasmatics released their album Beyond the Valley of 1984, Jean left the group. He then joined Steve Van Zandt's band, Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul, and played on two of their albums.
Solo Success and Working with Famous Artists
In 1985, Jean Beauvoir worked with Paul Stanley from the band Kiss. They wrote and recorded several songs for Kiss's album, Asylum. Jean even played bass and sang backup on some songs when Gene Simmons was not there.
After working with Kiss, Jean started his own solo career. His first solo album, Drums Along the Mohawk, came out in 1986. A song from this album, "Feel the Heat," was chosen for the Sylvester Stallone movie, Cobra. This song became a big hit, reaching the Top 10 in Europe and Australia. It also reached No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. Because of the song's success, Drums Along the Mohawk was released in the U.S. and reached No. 93 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
Jean also produced and co-wrote the Ramones song "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down."
