Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jean Louis Auguste Brachet (born March 19, 1909 – died August 10, 1988) was a smart Belgian scientist. He was a biochemist, which means he studied the chemistry of living things. Brachet made a very important discovery about something called RNA. This discovery helped us understand how our bodies make proteins, which are essential for life.

Jean Brachet's Life Story

Early Life and Education

Jean Brachet was born in Etterbeek, a town near Brussels in Belgium. His father, Albert Brachet, was also a scientist who studied how living things develop.

Jean went to school in Paris, France, at a place called L'Ecole Alsacienne. Later, he studied medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. He finished his studies there in 1934.

His Scientific Journey

After university, Brachet worked at several famous places. He did research at the University of Cambridge in England. He also worked at Princeton University in the United States.

He spent time at different marine biology institutes. These places study sea creatures and their environments. Later, Brachet became a professor back at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He taught about animal shapes and general biology. He also directed research at a special lab in Naples, Italy, focused on genetics and biophysics.

Amazing Discoveries About Cells

Jean Brachet made some very important discoveries about the tiny parts inside our cells. In 1933, he showed that DNA is found in structures called chromosomes. Chromosomes are like tiny packages of genetic information. He also found that RNA is present in the cytoplasm, which is the jelly-like substance filling a cell.

Working with another scientist named Torbjörn Caspersson, Brachet discovered something huge. They showed that RNA plays a very active role in making proteins. Proteins are like the building blocks and workers of our bodies.

Brachet also did new work on something called cell differentiation. This is how cells change and become specialized for different jobs. For example, a muscle cell is different from a skin cell. Brachet showed that before cells differentiate, new ribosomes are formed. Ribosomes are like tiny factories that make proteins. He also found that new messenger RNA leaves the cell's nucleus during this process. Messenger RNA carries instructions from DNA to the ribosomes.

Awards and Family

In 1934, Jean Brachet married Francoise de Baray. In 1948, he received a special award called the Francqui Prize for his work in biological and medical sciences. His daughter, Lisa Brachet, later wrote a book about his life.
