Jean David Ichbiah (born March 25, 1940 – died January 26, 2007) was a very smart French computer scientist. He is most famous for being the main designer of the Ada programming language. Ada is a special computer language used for many different tasks. It is known for being very reliable and safe. Jean Ichbiah worked on Ada from 1977 to 1983.

Early Life and Family
Jean Ichbiah's family came from Greece and Turkey. They moved to France before he was born.
His Work with Computers
Designing Computer Languages
In the early 1970s, Jean Ichbiah helped create a computer language called LIS. This language was based on other languages like Pascal and Simula. He was also a leader in groups that worked on how computer systems talk to each other.
Later, he joined a company called CII Honeywell Bull in France. There, he worked in the Programming Research team.
Creating the Ada Language
Jean Ichbiah's team entered a competition to design a new computer language. This language was for the United States Department of Defense. Their design, called "Green," won the competition in 1978.
After winning, Jean Ichbiah continued to lead the design of this language. It was then named "Ada" after Ada Lovelace, an early computer programmer.
In 1980, Ichbiah started his own company called Alsys. This company kept working on Ada to make it a standard language. Alsys also created special programs called compilers for Ada. These compilers were used by important organizations like NASA and the U.S. Army. Jean Ichbiah later moved to the Alsys office in Massachusetts, USA.
New Inventions
In the 1990s, Jean Ichbiah designed a special keyboard layout called FITALY. This layout is made for easy typing with a stylus or on a touchscreen.
After that, he started a company called Textware Solutions. This company sells software for typing on PDAs and tablet PCs. They also made typing software for doctors who write down medical notes.
Awards and Special Recognition
In 1979, Jean Ichbiah received two big honors in France. He was made a chevalier (knight) of the French Legion of Honour. He also became a correspondent of the French Academy of Sciences.
The United States Department of Defense also gave him an award. It was a Certificate of Distinguished Service for all his hard work on the Ada language.
His Passing
Jean Ichbiah passed away on January 26, 2007. He died from problems caused by a brain tumor.
