Jeanette Nolan (born December 30, 1911 – died June 5, 1998) was an American actress. She was nominated for four Emmy Awards. Jeanette Nolan starred in TV shows like The Virginian (1962–1971) and Dirty Sally (1974). She also appeared in movies, including Macbeth (1948).

Nolan was married for a long time to fellow actor John McIntire. They often worked together on different projects.

Jeanette Nolan started her acting journey at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. Her first radio show was in 1932, called Omar Khayyam. This was the first radio broadcast that went across the entire country! She kept acting for many years, all the way into the 1990s.

Early Roles in Radio and Film

Nolan was a regular on several radio series. These included Young Doctor Malone (1939–1940) and The Great Gildersleeve (1949–1952). She also appeared in many other radio episodes.

Her first movie role was in 1948. She played Lady Macbeth in Orson Welles' film Macbeth. This movie was based on Shakespeare's famous play. Even though the film got mixed reviews, Nolan's movie career took off. She often played important supporting roles. Fans of old crime movies might remember her as a police officer's corrupt wife in The Big Heat.

Television Appearances and Notable Shows

Jeanette Nolan appeared in over 300 television shows! She was in the religious series Crossroads. She also played Dr. Marion in an episode of Crusader in 1956. She appeared on the show State Trooper.

In 1957, she was "Ma Grilk" in an episode of the TV Western Gunsmoke. She also appeared in The Rebel in 1959. Nolan was a guest star in two episodes of Richard Diamond, Private Detective. She also played Maggie Bowers in Peter Gunn in 1959. She was in two episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

From 1959 to 1960, she played Annette Deveraux in the CBS western series Hotel de Paree. She also appeared in Have Gun – Will Travel multiple times. Nolan acted in other western films, like The Wild Women of Chastity Gulch (1982).

Nolan made six guest appearances on CBS's Perry Mason. She played different characters, including a murderer and a defendant. She also guest-starred as "Sister Mary Paul" in Bat Masterson in 1961.

She played Janet Picard in Bourbon Street Beat. She also gave a very strong performance as a wild old woman in the "Parasite Mansion" episode of Thriller. Nolan appeared in Target: The Corruptors! in 1962. She was also in The Eleventh Hour. In 1963, she played a fortune teller in GE True.

Nolan was a regular cast member on The Richard Boone Show, appearing in 25 episodes. In 1963, she was Mrs. Mertens in Going My Way. She appeared three times on Wagon Train, a show where her husband, John McIntire, was a main star.

In 1963, Nolan guest-starred as Sister Therese in the World War II series Combat!. She also appeared on Dr. Kildare three times. She was in an episode of Slattery's People in 1964. Earlier, she had worked with Richard Crenna and Walter Brennan in their sitcom, The Real McCoys.

Nolan played witches in two of Rod Serling's TV shows. She was in The Twilight Zone episode "Jess-Belle" and the Night Gallery segment "Since Aunt Ada Came to Stay". She also appeared in another Twilight Zone episode, "The Hunt," in 1962.

In 1964, she guest-starred on Gunsmoke again, playing "Aunt Thede". In 1965, Nolan played Ma Burns in Laredo. She also had other roles on Laredo. In 1967, she joined the cast of The Virginian as Holly Grainger, along with her husband John McIntire.

In 1968, Nolan was in Ironside, playing a mother who lost her child. That same year, she appeared on Hawaii Five-O as Aunt Martha.

Nolan guest-starred on the sitcom The Mothers-in-Law in two episodes. She played a grandmother and then a Scottish nanny.

In 1974, she starred in Dirty Sally, a spin-off of Gunsmoke. She had played a recurring role on Gunsmoke for three episodes. She also played the main character in the short film Peege (1972). Jeanette Nolan appeared on Gunsmoke more than any other female guest star.

Nolan played Mrs. Peck in the Columbo series in 1973. She was also in another Columbo episode in 1978. She and her husband John McIntire played Gloria and George Hancock in an episode of The Love Boat in 1978. In 1985, she played Alma Lindstrom, Rose Nylund's adoptive mother, in The Golden Girls.

Her last movie role was in Robert Redford's The Horse Whisperer in 1998.

Jeanette Nolan's Personal Life

Jeanette Nolan was born in Los Angeles. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School there.

In 1935, Nolan married actor John McIntire. They stayed married until he passed away in 1991. Nolan and McIntire had two children: Holly, who became a photographer, and Tim, who became an actor.

Nolan and McIntire often worked together, especially from the late 1960s onwards. Sometimes they did voice acting. In 1969, they were in a TV reading of a radio play called The Plot to Overthrow Christmas. McIntire was the Devil, and Nolan was Lucrezia Borgia.

In 1977, they both voiced characters in Disney's animated movie The Rescuers. McIntire was the cat Rufus, and Nolan was the muskrat Ellie Mae. Four years later, they worked on another Disney film, The Fox and the Hound. McIntire voiced Mr. Digger, a grumpy badger. Nolan voiced Widow Tweed, a kind old widow who takes in a fox cub.

They also appeared together on screen, often playing a married couple. They were in episodes of The Love Boat (1978), Charlie's Angels (1979), The Incredible Hulk (1980), Goliath Awaits (1981), Quincy, M.E. (1983), and Night Court (1985).

Jeanette Nolan passed away from a stroke on June 5, 1998. She was buried in Tobacco Valley Cemetery in Eureka, Montana.
