History of Jenner
Historically, Jenner was part of a large area called Rancho Muniz. The town is named after Dr. Elijah K. Jenner. He was a dentist and inventor from Vermont. In 1850, Elijah came to California to search for gold. While working as a miner, he invented a special pump. This pump could lift water 100 feet (about 30 meters) high! He even made a model of his pump out of pure gold for his patent application. This golden model is the only one the Patent Office has ever received.
Elijah's family joined him in California in 1852. They traveled by ship from the Great Lakes, crossed Panama, and then sailed up the Pacific Coast. By 1854, the Jenner family settled near the Russian River's mouth. They built their home in what became known as Jenner Gulch, which is where the town is today. Elijah's son, Charles K. Jenner, later became a well-known lawyer in Seattle. He even argued cases in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.
About 16 miles (26 km) north of Jenner is Stillwater Cove Regional Park. This park has places for picnics, beach access, and a historic one-room schoolhouse.
