Her mother, Geraldine Dietz Fox, helped create the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) and started a foundation for hearing research. Jennifer was one of five children. She went to Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia.
Jennifer knew she wanted to make movies from a young age. She graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1980 with a degree in Creative Writing. In 1981, she left New York University to start filming her first documentary, Beirut: The Last Home Movie.
Exploring Jennifer Fox's Film Career
Jennifer Fox has created many films that explore real-life stories and important topics.
Filming Beirut: The Last Home Movie
In 1981, Fox traveled to Beirut with a friend. They went to her friend's family home, a 200-year-old palace that had been damaged during the Lebanese Civil War. There, Fox filmed Beirut: The Last Home Movie (1987). This documentary shows the Bustros family living in their damaged home and trying to survive the civil war. The film was very successful, winning awards for Best Cinematography and Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 1988.
An American Love Story and Relationships
Fox's next film, An American Love Story (1999), was inspired by her own experiences. She noticed how people reacted to interracial relationships. This led her to create a documentary about the relationship between Bill Sims and Karen Wilson. Fox and one other crew member lived with the couple for over a year and a half to film their daily lives. The 10-part series showed their challenges, including Bill's music career and the disapproval they faced while raising their family. The film won a Gracie Award in 2000 and was named one of the top TV series of 1999 by The New York Times.
Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman
Fox spent five years making her third documentary, Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman (2006). This TV series had six hour-long parts. In this film, Fox combined her own personal story with interviews and footage of women from all over the world. She wanted to understand what it means to be a woman in modern life. The film explores different women's experiences and feelings.
My Reincarnation and Spiritual Journeys
Fox's fourth documentary, My Reincarnation (2011), was filmed over 20 years. She started traveling with a Buddhist master named Namkhai Norbu in 1989. She began recording his life and the life of his son, Yeshi. After working on other projects, Fox returned 13 years later to continue filming. The movie shows Yeshi and his father trying to balance modern life with traditional beliefs. The film was released in the U.S. on PBS's POV series.
The Tale and Understanding Memories
In 2018, Fox directed The Tale (2018). This film was not a documentary but a story film, inspired by her own life. The script was based on real conversations. The movie stars Academy Award-winning actress Laura Dern. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and later aired on HBO. The film's story is about a woman who remembers and tries to understand a difficult experience from her childhood.
While making Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman, Fox started thinking about her own past. She realized that a story she wrote in middle school, called The Tale, described a relationship she had at 13 that she later understood differently as an adult. Fox wanted to use storytelling to help people learn about and understand difficult issues. She worked with mental health experts and survivors to create the film. Along with HBO, she helped develop a website and guides to go with the film. These resources help educate people and encourage conversations about childhood experiences, the effects of trauma, and how memory works.
The Tale was nominated for several awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2018. It won awards for best screenplay and editing at the Durban International Film Festival.
Teaching and Education
Jennifer Fox is also a teacher. For 25 years, she has taught classes in New York City and led workshops around the world. She teaches about directing, writing, producing, and creating films. She is currently a professor at New York University.
Filmmaking Style and Themes
Jennifer Fox often uses a filmmaking style called cinéma vérité, which means "cinema truth." This style tries to show real life as it happens, without much interference. However, Fox also includes interviews with the people in her films. This helps to show both what her subjects do and how they think and feel.
Many of Fox's films explore the idea of understanding difficult experiences. In films like The Tale and Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman, she looks at how past events can shape a person's life and memories. She uses personal stories to examine these effects. She also explores how ongoing challenges affect people's lives in films like Beirut: The Last Home Movie and An American Love Story.
Personal Life
Jennifer Fox is married to Swiss cinematographer Patrick Lindenmaier.
