Jerdacuttup's History

The name Jerdacuttup comes from an Aboriginal word. Its exact meaning is not known today.

Early Explorers

In 1870, an explorer named John Forrest traveled through this area. He wrote the name as Jerdicutup. A few years later, in 1875, C Price surveyed the land. He recorded the area's name as Jerdicat and Verdicat.

Town Development

During the 1960s, the south-east part of Western Australia began to be used for farming. Jerdacuttup was created as a place to support the farmers in this new agricultural region. The government officially recognized the town in 1966.

Farming in Jerdacuttup

The main types of farming in the Jerdacuttup area are raising sheep and growing cereal crops like wheat or barley. Farmers also raise cattle and grow lupins, but to a smaller extent.

In the past, Jerdacuttup was a collection point for grain. This means farmers would bring their harvested grain to a special site here. However, the town is no longer a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling.

The Jerdacuttup River

The Jerdacuttup River is located about 16 kilometers (10 miles) to the west of the town.

Jerdacuttup in Pop Culture

The Australian band The Triffids mentioned the town in their song "Jerdacuttup Man." This song is from their album called Calenture.
