Jerry Peters' Music Journey
Early Life and Education
Jerry Peters was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in a town called Slidell, Louisiana. When he was 14, Jerry moved to Los Angeles, California. There, he went to Susan Miller Dorsey High School.
After high school, he studied art at Los Angeles City College. He also kept taking music classes. Later, he went to the California Institute of Arts. However, he left college early to start his career in music.
Starting in the Music World
While in college, Jerry met Anita Poree and her brother Greg Poree. They began writing songs together. Jerry and Anita Poree created the popular R&B song "Going in Circles." The group The Friends of Distinction performed this song. It became Jerry Peters' first "gold record." A gold record means a song or album has sold many copies.
Around this time, Jerry became a very popular musician. Many people wanted him to write, arrange, and produce their music.
Working with Famous Artists
In 1972, Jerry Peters released his only album, called Blueprint for Discovery. It was released by Mercury Records. Also in 1972, Jerry started working with The Sylvers family, a musical group. He helped produce their albums, including The Sylvers II. He also produced two albums for Foster Sylvers.
Jerry Peters began producing albums for jazz pianist Gene Harris in 1975. They released four albums together with Blue Note Records. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Jerry worked with many famous musicians. He wrote songs, produced projects, and played on recordings for artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Natalie Cole, The Jacksons, and Lionel Richie.
In 2011, Jerry Peters won his first Grammy Award. A Grammy is a very important award in the music industry. He won it for co-writing "Gospel Song of the Year" with Kirk Whalum. The song was called "It's What I Do."
Today, Jerry Peters lives and works in Los Angeles. He is also a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
