Jesulín de Ubrique facts for kids
Jesús Janeiro Bazán (born on January 9, 1974), known to many as Jesulín de Ubrique, is a famous Spanish bullfighter. He was born in Ubrique, a town in Cádiz, Spain.
Biography
Jesulín's parents are Humberto Janeiro López and María del Carmen Bazán Domínguez. He has three siblings: Humberto, Carmen, and another bullfighter, Víctor Manuel Janeiro Bazán.
Jesulín went to the Bullfighting School of Cádiz to learn his skills. He first wore the special bullfighter's outfit, called the traje de luces (which means "suit of lights"), in El Bosque on August 22, 1987. He had his first bullfight with horses in Ronda on April 30, 1987. During this fight, he was with other bullfighters, Julio Aparicio and Finito de Córdoba. He performed very well, earning two "ears" from the bull. In 1989, he won the famous "Zapato de Oro" (meaning "Golden Shoe") award in Arnedo.
He officially became a full bullfighter, a process called the alternativa, in Nîmes, France, on September 21, 1990. His godfather for this important event was José Mari Manzanares, and Emilio Muñoz was the witness.
Jesulín first performed in the famous Las Ventas bullring in Madrid on May 25, 1992. His style of bullfighting was inspired by Paco Ojeda. He was known for being precise and brave in the ring.
His most successful year was 1994. He led all bullfighters by performing in 153 bullfights and earning 339 ears. The next year, 1995, he broke his own record, taking part in 161 bullfights and earning 279 ears. Some experts felt that fighting so many bulls made his style less exciting, but it also made him very rich. He was sometimes criticized for unusual actions, like wearing yellow or climbing on top of a bull.
Jesulín continued to bullfight many times each year. In 1996, he had 121 bullfights in Spain. He fought 87 times in 1997, 79 times in 1998, and 11 times in 1999 before taking a break. He returned in 2001, performing in 73 bullfights in Spain. He continued to be one of the top bullfighters for several more years.
Besides bullfighting, Jesulín became very popular in magazines and on TV. In 1994, he held a special bullfight in Aranjuez just for women. Because of this, he became known as "the bullfighter of women." He also tried singing and recorded an album. It included a famous song called "Toda." In 1995, he was chosen to announce the Carnival of Cadiz.
In 1999, at only 25 years old, he decided to take a break from bullfighting because he felt he had lost his motivation. He returned to the ring in 2001 in Olivenza, aiming to fight fewer bulls and enjoy it more.
In 2001, Jesulín was in a very serious car accident.
In January 2003, his hometown of Ubrique gave him a special medal. They honored him for making their town famous through his bullfighting career. After another break, he returned to the bullring on March 8, 2010.
Later, Jesulín appeared on several television shows in 2013 and 2014. He also started acting, appearing in the movie Torrente 5: Operación Eurovegas with Santiago Segura.
There is a museum and a monument dedicated to Jesulín in the bullring of his hometown.

In 1995, Jesulín started a relationship with María Belén Esteban Menéndez. They had a daughter named Andrea Janeiro Esteban, born on July 20, 1999. The couple later separated.
