Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jevrem Brković (Јеврем Брковић; born December 29, 1933 – died January 24, 2021) was an important Montenegrin poet, writer, journalist, and historian. He was known for speaking out against things he didn't agree with. Brković helped start the Doclean Academy of Sciences and Arts (DANU). This was a group of scholars in Montenegro. Later, this group joined the main national academy, the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU).

About His Life

Jevrem Brković was born in a village called Seoca, near Podgorica, in what was then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He worked as a journalist at Radio Titograd and helped edit a magazine called "Ovdje".

He spent some of his early life in Belgrade, which was the capital city of Yugoslavia. In 1975, he won the "13 July prize." This is a very important award in Montenegro. While in Belgrade, Brković spoke up for people's rights and a free society.

During the 1990s, when there were wars in Yugoslavia, Brković strongly supported Montenegro. He also spoke out against the government led by Milo Đukanović. In 1994, because of pressure from the government, Brković left Montenegro and went to Croatia for a while. In Croatia, he studied the work of historians like Savić Marković Štedimlija and Ivo Pilar.

He came back to Montenegro in 1999. He said that Montenegro "once again became Montenegrin." After that, he strongly supported Montenegro becoming an independent country, separate from Serbia and Montenegro.

In the same year, Brković started the Doclean Academy of Sciences and Arts. This was a group that studied Montenegrin history and identity. It was seen as a group that had different ideas from the official Montenegrin Academy. Around this time, he also became the editor of a literary paper called Crnogorski književni list. This paper was published in several languages, including Montenegrin, Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian language.

Brković was both praised and criticized for his strong opinions. He was seen by many as a patriot who loved his country and supported freedom. However, some people called him names because he was against Serbian nationalism. His books were also known for their funny but sometimes strong language. In 2001, his organization, the Doclean Academy, worked to support a group that wanted an independent Montenegro.

On October 24, 2006, Brković and his driver, Srđan Vojičić, were attacked. Sadly, Vojičić was killed, and Brković was hurt. The attack happened because of his latest book, Ljubavnik Duklje (The Doclean Lover). In this book, he made fun of some powerful people in Montenegro.

Jevrem Brković passed away on January 24, 2021, when he was 87 years old.
