Jiang Yuyuan (born November 1, 1991) is a famous retired Chinese gymnast. She was the Chinese all-around senior National Champion in 2008. Jiang was also a key member of the team that won the gold medal for the People's Republic of China at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Jiang helped her team win silver at the 2007 World Championships. She also won bronze medals with her team at the 2010 and 2011 World Championships. In 2010, she became the captain of the Chinese national team. She won a silver medal in the all-around competition at the 2010 World Championships. This was the highest a Chinese woman had ever placed in the all-around at a World or Olympic championship at that time.

About Jiang Yuyuan

Jiang Yuyuan was born in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China. She has a strong interest in photography, cool gadgets, cars, fashion, and makeup. She also enjoys listening to English songs.

Her teammates, Cheng Fei and Yang Yilin, said that Jiang was the most fashion-conscious member of the national women's team. Jiang even taught other gymnasts about makeup techniques. She once said in an interview that she could be "a little bit of a rebel" sometimes. Her coach, Lu Shanzhen, agreed and said Jiang had the "most character" among the female gymnasts. Jiang looked up to her fellow gymnast, Cheng Fei.

Jiang and her teammate, Deng Linlin, appeared in an official Olympics documentary called Dream Weavers 2008. This film followed the gymnasts from 2003 until Jiang's first big international competition in 2007.

Jiang's Gymnastics Journey

Starting Young

When Jiang was very young, a relative of famous gymnast Li Ning was her neighbor. He noticed how energetic she was and suggested to her parents that she try gymnastics. Her parents followed his advice, and Jiang started gymnastics lessons at age four.

She was once chosen for a three-month training camp with the Guangxi Provincial Team. However, her parents were asked to take her home early. Her coach believed in her talent and convinced her parents to let her continue training personally. Since joining a Provincial Team is important for a gymnast's career in China, Jiang later moved to join the Zhejiang Provincial Team.

Joining the National Team

In 2002, Jiang won the all-around competition at the Provincial Gymnastics Championships for the Zhejiang Provincial Team. This caught the eye of the National Team coaches. In 2003, she joined a National Training Camp, but it had to close because of the SARS outbreak.

Jiang joined National Team 2 in 2004. In 2006, she was chosen from 300 hopefuls to join National Team 1, the top team.

Senior International Debut

Jiang made her first big international appearance in 2007. She was part of the Chinese team that won the silver medal at the 2007 World Gymnastics Championships. In the individual events, she placed 4th on the floor exercise. Later that year, in November 2007, she won the all-around title at the Good Luck Beijing Olympic Test Event.

Olympic Gold and Challenges

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Jiang helped the Chinese team win the gold medal. This was a huge achievement! Individually, she finished 6th in the all-around competition and 4th in the floor exercise final.

Jiang competed at the Olympics even though she had an elbow injury. Her coach said this injury affected her performance, especially on vault. The pain stopped her from doing her difficult 2.5-twisting Yurchenko vault, which was important for her individual all-around score. Because of this injury, her coach decided to replace her with Deng Linlin for the vault in the team finals, just 20 minutes before the competition started.

Later Career and Leadership

In 2009, Jiang competed in the 2009 Summer Universiade. She won a team gold medal with her teammates.

In 2010, Jiang was chosen to compete at the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The Chinese team qualified second for the team final. Jiang herself qualified 4th for the all-around final. In the team final, Jiang competed on all four events. Even with some falls and mistakes, the Chinese women's team won a bronze medal. In the all-around final, Jiang won a silver medal, finishing second behind Russia's Aliya Mustafina.

Jiang also competed in the Toyota Cup, winning gold on uneven bars and bronze on floor. She was selected as an alternate for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Since 2010, Jiang served as the captain of the Chinese team. At the National Training Center, she was responsible for looking after the younger gymnasts in the dormitory.
