History of Jiggs
Early Days and Name Changes
Long ago, the area where Jiggs is now was a year-round camp for Native Americans. They would gather pine nuts there.
The settlement had a few different names at the same time, which was confusing! People called it Mound Valley, Skelton, and Hylton. Because no one could agree on a single name, the postal service decided to pick a new one.
On December 18, 1918, a new post office was opened. They chose the name Jiggs from a list given by local ranchers. Jiggs was a character from a popular comic strip called Bringing Up Father. In the comic, Jiggs was always arguing with his wife, Maggie.
Jiggs in Pop Culture
Jiggs was the fictional home base for "King Fisher," a character created by the famous author Zane Grey.
The town also appeared in a Volkswagen advertisement in 1965. The ad showed the entire population of Jiggs—five adults, four children, and a dog—all fitting comfortably inside a VW Bus.
