James Stewart Bain (born December 19, 1947 – died January 23, 2016) was a talented musician from Scotland. He was best known for playing the bass guitar. Jimmy played in famous rock bands like Rainbow and Dio.

He also worked with other well-known artists. These included Kate Bush and Thin Lizzy's lead singer, Phil Lynott. Jimmy helped write songs for Phil Lynott's solo albums.

Early life

Jimmy Bain was born in Newtonmore, Scotland. When he was a young teenager, he played in several local bands. His parents and younger brothers moved to Vancouver, Canada.

At that time, Jimmy was already playing music professionally in a band called Street Noise. He did visit his family in Canada for a short time.

Career

Joining Rainbow

Jimmy Bain was asked to join the band Rainbow. The band's leader, Ritchie Blackmore, saw him play in London. Jimmy recorded a studio album called Rising with Rainbow.

He also went on a world tour with them. During this tour, he played on Rainbow's first live album, On Stage. In January 1977, Jimmy left the band. After that, he toured Europe with musician John Cale.

Forming Wild Horses

In 1978, Jimmy Bain started his own band called Wild Horses. He was the lead singer, songwriter, and bass player for the band. Other members included Thin Lizzy's guitarist Brian Robertson.

Wild Horses released two albums in Europe: Wild Horses (1980) and Stand Your Ground (1981). After these albums, some band members left.

Jimmy then worked with other artists. He played with Roger Chapman, Roy Harper, and Gary Moore. He also played on Kate Bush's 1982 album, The Dreaming.

Jimmy was a close friend of Phil Lynott. They wrote songs together for Phil's solo albums. Jimmy also played keyboards in Phil Lynott's band during tours. One of their songs, "Old Town", became a big hit when The Corrs re-recorded it in 1999.

Playing with Dio

In 1983, Jimmy Bain joined forces again with Ronnie James Dio. Dio was the former singer for Rainbow. They formed the band Dio. Jimmy was a very important part of this new band.

He helped write many famous songs for Dio. These include "Rainbow in the Dark" and "Holy Diver". These songs appeared on their first album, Holy Diver, released in 1983. Jimmy also co-wrote songs for other Dio albums like The Last in Line (1984) and Sacred Heart (1985).

In the mid-1980s, Jimmy Bain started a foundation called Hear 'n Aid. He wanted to use the power of rock music to help end world hunger. He co-wrote a song called "Stars" with Vivian Campbell and Ronnie James Dio. This song was the rock world's answer to "We Are The World". "Stars" raised a lot of money for famine relief. Jimmy gave all his share of the money to a charity called Children of the Night.

In 2005, Jimmy Bain worked with Vinny Appice, who was a drummer for Black Sabbath and Dio. They had two projects: The Hollywood All Starz and 3 Legged Dogg. The Hollywood All Starz played live concerts with popular songs from the 1980s. 3 Legged Dogg released an album of new songs.

Later career

Jimmy Bain continued to tour with Hollywood Allstarz. This group was a "supergroup" with many famous metal musicians from the 1980s.

In 2013, Jimmy formed a band called Last in Line. This band included other original members who wrote and played on the early classic Dio albums. They planned to play those songs live.

Personal life

In 1979, Jimmy Bain married Lady Sophia Crichton-Stuart. She was the daughter of a Scottish nobleman. They had one daughter named Samantha Ella Bain, born in 1981. The song "Samantha" by Phil Lynott and John Sykes was written for her.

Death

On January 23, 2016, Jimmy Bain passed away. He was on a cruise called "Hysteria on the High Seas" with the band Def Leppard. He was supposed to perform with his group Last In Line the next day.

His bandmates told fans that he had been battling pneumonia for some time. The cause of his death was determined to be lung cancer. Jimmy was not aware he had cancer; he only knew about his pneumonia. He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills), near his bandmate Ronnie James Dio.
