Jind State was a special kind of kingdom in India. It was called a princely state during the time when the British ruled India, right up until India became independent in 1947.

This state covered an area of about 3,260 square kilometers. In the 1940s, it earned around 3,000,000 Indian Rupees each year.

History of Jind State

The princely state of Jind was started in 1763. Its rulers belonged to the Phulkian dynasty, a family of Jat people. Jind was part of the "Cis-Sutlej states," which were kingdoms located south of the Sutlej River.

These small kingdoms used to pay tribute to the Maratha Empire. But after a big war between the Marathas and the British (the Second Anglo-Maratha War) from 1803 to 1805, the British took control of this area.

On April 25, 1809, Jind became a British protectorate. This meant the British protected the state, but its rulers still managed their own affairs. Gajpat Singh was the first ruler, known as a raja, until 1789. After him, Bhag Singh ruled until 1819, then Fateh Singh until 1822, and Sangat Singh until 1834.

Jind State officially joined India on August 20, 1948. It became part of a larger union called the Patiala and East Punjab States Union. This meant Jind stopped being a separate state. Today, the town and district of Jind are part of the Haryana state in India.
