Jinny Yu's Life and Art Journey
Early Life and Education
Jinny Yu was born in Seoul, South Korea. In 1988, she moved to Canada and settled in Montreal. She began her art studies at Dawson College, earning a fine arts degree in 1995. Three years later, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Concordia University.
During the 1990s, Yu taught art at different schools in Quebec. She also taught at the American School of Paris in France. Later, she continued her studies at York University. In 2002, she earned two master's degrees there. One was in Arts and Media Administration, and the other was in Visual Arts.
Teaching and Research
From 2003 to 2005, Yu worked as an assistant professor. She taught at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. After that, she became a research fellow for a year. This was at Venice International University in Italy.
Yu also spent time as an artist-in-residence. She worked in Berlin, Germany, and Beijing, China. She also visited the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. In 2007, she started teaching in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Ottawa. Today, she is a Professor there. Jinny Yu lives in Ottawa, Canada.
Exploring Themes in Art
Yu's art often explores interesting ideas. Her painting series, Story of a Global Nomad, from 2007-2008, looked at how buildings affect society. This series, along with her 2009 work Sequence, helped her become a recognized artist.
She also explores feelings of being separate or disconnected. This comes from her own experiences of moving to new places. She calls this "global nomadism." Yu's art also looks at how painting connects with the space around it.
In 2015, Yu created a special art piece for the 56th Venice Biennale. It was called Don't They Ever Stop Migrating? This artwork was shown at the Oratorio di San Ludovico. The installation used the 1963 film The Birds as a way to talk about people moving across seas. This artwork is now part of the permanent collection at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
