Jiří Rusnok (born 16 October 1960) is a Czech politician and economist. He served as the prime minister of the Czech Republic from June 2013 to January 2014. Later, from 2016 to 2022, he was the governor of the Czech National Bank.

Before becoming prime minister, Rusnok worked in the Czech government. He was the Minister of Finance from 2001 to 2002. Then, he served as the Minister of Industry and Trade from 2002 to 2003. President Miloš Zeman appointed him as prime minister on 25 June 2013. He took over from Petr Nečas, who had resigned due to political issues.

On 25 May 2016, President Miloš Zeman chose Rusnok to be the fourth governor of the Czech National Bank. He started this important role on 1 July 2016. His second term as governor ended on 30 June 2022. Aleš Michl then took over the position from him.

Early Life and Education

Jiří Rusnok was born in Ostrava-Vítkovice. This city is now part of the Czech Republic. He went to the University of Economics in Prague. He finished his studies there in 1984.

Political Career

Rusnok started his career working for government planning offices. These offices helped plan the country's economy. Before the Velvet Revolution, he was a candidate to join the Communist Party.

In the 1990s, Rusnok worked for the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions. He was a director there from 1992 to 1998. In 1998, he officially joined politics as a member of the Czech Social Democratic Party.

Minister Roles

In June 2001, Prime Minister Miloš Zeman made Rusnok his Minister of Finance. After that, he became the Minister of Industry and Trade. This was in the government led by Vladimír Špidla. However, Rusnok disagreed with Špidla. Because of this, he left his government job and politics in March 2003. After leaving politics, he worked in private companies.

Prime Minister of the Czech Republic

In June 2013, President Miloš Zeman appointed Rusnok as Prime Minister. He led a temporary government, also known as a caretaker government. This decision was not popular with other political parties. Some parties called it irresponsible. Other parties wanted early elections instead.

On 7 August 2013, the parliament voted on Rusnok's government. His government did not get enough support to continue. Only 93 lawmakers supported him, while 100 were against. Seven lawmakers did not vote. After this vote, Rusnok said he would resign the next day. He believed this result would lead to new elections.

Governor of the Czech National Bank

In 2014, President Zeman appointed Rusnok to the board of the Czech National Bank. This board has seven members. In 2016, he became the bank's governor. He took over from Miroslav Singer. Again, President Zeman made this appointment. In 2022, Zeman appointed Aleš Michl to replace Rusnok as governor.

Political Views

Jiří Rusnok supports the Czech Republic joining the euro currency. In 2014, he also supported the central bank's plan to make the Czech koruna (the Czech currency) weaker. This was done to help the economy recover from a long period of slow growth. It also helped fight the risk of prices falling too much.
