A Prince's Life and Rule
Joachim Frederick was born in Cölln, a city that is now part of Berlin. His father was John George, Elector of Brandenburg, who was also an Elector. His mother was Sophie of Legnica.
Before becoming Elector, Joachim Frederick served as an administrator for the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. This was a big church territory. He held this role from 1566 to 1598.
Becoming Elector
In 1598, Joachim Frederick took over from his father as the Elector of Brandenburg. This made him a very important leader in the Holy Roman Empire. He ruled until his death in 1608. After him, his son John Sigismund became the next Elector.
Family Life
Joachim Frederick was married twice. His first marriage was on March 7, 1570, to Catherine of Brandenburg-Küstrin. She was the daughter of John, Margrave of Brandenburg-Küstrin.
His second marriage was on October 23, 1603, to Eleanor of Prussia. She was born on August 21, 1583.
Important Roles
In 1605, Joachim Frederick also became the regent of the Duchy of Prussia. A regent is someone who rules a country when the official ruler is too young or unable to govern.
He also held other titles, like "Duke of Stettin, Pomerania, Cassubia, Vandalorum, and Crossen." These titles were mostly honorary, meaning they didn't give him actual power over those lands.

Joachim Frederick had many children with his first wife, Catherine of Brandenburg-Küstrin:
