Hockey Career
Starting in Sweden
Joakim Nordström began his professional career in his home country of Sweden. He played for the team AIK IF and made his first appearance in the top Swedish league, the SHL, on September 23, 2010.
Even after being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL, he stayed with AIK for one more season to gain more experience.
Moving to North America
In 2013, Nordström moved to North America to play for the Blackhawks. He made his NHL debut on October 1, 2013, and scored his very first NHL goal just ten days later against the New York Islanders.
For the next couple of years, he split his time between the Blackhawks and their minor league team, the Rockford IceHogs. In the 2014-15 season, he was the captain of the IceHogs. That same season, he played with the Blackhawks during their playoff run and helped them win the Stanley Cup.
In March 2015, Nordström was given a two-game suspension for an unsafe hit called "boarding" on another player. This type of penalty is given to protect players from getting injured.
Playing for Different NHL Teams
Over the next several years, Nordström played for a few different teams in the NHL.
- Carolina Hurricanes (2015–2018): In 2015, the Blackhawks traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes. He played with them for three seasons.
- Boston Bruins (2018–2020): After his time with the Hurricanes, he signed a two-year contract with the Boston Bruins.
- Calgary Flames (2020–2021): He then signed a one-year contract with the Calgary Flames.
Playing in Europe Again
After eight seasons in the NHL, Nordström decided to return to Europe. He signed a contract with CSKA Moscow in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for the 2021-22 season. However, he left the team in March 2022 because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In June 2022, he joined his current team, HC Davos, in the Swiss National League.
