Joanna Bruzdowicz (born May 17, 1943 – died November 3, 2021) was a talented composer from Poland. She wrote many different kinds of music, including operas, symphonies, and music for movies and TV shows.

A Life in Music
Joanna Bruzdowicz was born in Warsaw, Poland. She loved music from a young age. She studied at the Warsaw Music High School and then at the State Higher School of Music. There, she learned how to compose music and play the piano. She earned her master's degree in 1966.
Studies in Paris
After her studies in Poland, Joanna received a special scholarship from the French government. This allowed her to continue her music education in Paris from 1968 to 1970. She learned from famous teachers like Nadia Boulanger, Olivier Messiaen, and Pierre Schaeffer. She also joined a group called the Groupe de Recherches Musicales, which explored electronic music. Later, she wrote her doctoral paper at the Sorbonne, focusing on "Mathematics and Logic in Contemporary Music."
Life in Belgium and France
After finishing her studies in France, Joanna moved to Belgium. She lived there with her husband, Horst-Jürgen Tittel. He used to be a top advisor for the European Commission. Together, they created a German TV series called Stahlkammer Zürich. Joanna wrote over 15 hours of music for this show! Later, they moved to the South of France. They had three sons: Mark, Jan, and Jörg Tittel.
Her Musical Creations
As a composer, Joanna Bruzdowicz created many different types of music. She wrote operas, which are plays set to music. She also composed symphonies, which are large pieces for orchestras. Her work included chamber music, written for small groups of instruments. She even wrote music specifically for children.
Music for Film and TV
Joanna was also very active in writing music for movies and television. She composed music for over 25 hours of film and TV shows. Her compositions were released on many CDs and LPs (records). Her music was also featured in TV programs in Belgium, France, Germany, and Poland.
Operas and Collaborations
Joanna wrote several operas based on famous books and plays. Some of these include:
- The Penal Colony (from a story by Franz Kafka, 1972)
- The Women of Troy (from a play by Euripides, 1973)
- The Gates of Paradise (from a book by Jerzy Andrzejewski, 1987)
She worked closely with the French film director Agnès Varda for many years. Joanna composed music for several of Varda's films. This included Sans Toit Ni Loi (also known as Vagabond), which won a big award in Venice in 1985. She also wrote music for Varda's award-winning documentary, Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (The Gleaners and I).
More recently, her music was featured in Les Ames Grises (The Grey Souls). This was her second time working with director Yves Angelo. It was also the last movie starring the French comedian Jacques Villeret.
