Joe Corvo's Hockey Journey
Starting in Hockey
Joe Corvo showed his talent early in his career. He played in the World Junior Championships in Switzerland. His team, the USA, finished second to Canada. Even so, Joe was named the best defenseman of the tournament.
After that, he played college hockey for three seasons. From 1995 to 1998, he was part of the team at Western Michigan University. He even played alongside Jamal Mayers, who also became an NHL player.
Playing in the NHL
Joining the Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings picked Joe Corvo in the 4th round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. This was in 1997. He made his first appearance in the NHL during the 2002–03 season. He played for the Kings for three seasons. His best season with the Kings was in 2005–06. He scored 14 goals and made 26 assists, adding up to 40 points.
Time with the Ottawa Senators
On July 1, 2006, Corvo signed a four-year contract with the Ottawa Senators. It was worth $10.5 million. On October 26, 2006, he set a new record for Senators defensemen. He scored one goal and made four assists in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was named the top player of that game. That season, the Senators reached the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals. They lost to the Anaheim Ducks in five games.
Moving to the Carolina Hurricanes
In February 2008, the Senators traded Corvo to the Carolina Hurricanes. This trade also included Patrick Eaves going to the Hurricanes. In return, the Senators received Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman. On March 16, 2008, Corvo scored a hat trick against his old team, the Senators. This was his first game against them after the trade. He became only the third defenseman in the history of the Hartford Whalers-Carolina Hurricanes team to score a hat trick. That season, between both teams, Corvo scored 13 goals and 35 assists. This gave him a total of 48 points.
Playing for the Washington Capitals
Joe Corvo played for the Hurricanes for almost two seasons. Then, on March 3, 2010, he was traded to the Washington Capitals. This trade happened right before the deadline. The Capitals gave up Brian Pothier, Oskar Osala, and a second-round draft pick for him. Corvo played his first game for the Capitals on March 4. He finished the season with two goals and six points in 18 games. His team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
Back to Carolina and Boston
Corvo returned to the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent on July 7, 2010. He signed a two-year contract. He played most of two seasons with the Hurricanes. Then, on July 5, 2011, he was traded to the Boston Bruins. After one season with the Bruins, Corvo came back to the Hurricanes for a third time. He signed a one-year deal on July 1, 2012. He scored six goals and 11 assists in the shortened 48-game season. The Hurricanes did not make it to the playoffs that year.
Final Stop in Ottawa
After one season with the Hurricanes, Corvo returned to the Ottawa Senators. He signed a one-year deal on July 8, 2013. On March 5, 2014, Corvo was sent to the Chicago Wolves. This was after he cleared NHL waivers.
