Joseph Little Twig (1893 – March 6, 1939) was an early professional football player. He played in the National Football League (NFL) from 1922 to 1926. During his career, he played for several teams. These teams included the Oorang Indians, Rock Island Independents, Akron Indians, and Canton Bulldogs.
Playing Football: Early Years and NFL Career
Joseph Little Twig was a member of the Mohawk nation. He first learned to play football at the Thomas Indian School. This school was located on the Cattaraugus Reservation. He later played at the famous Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Before starting his NFL career, Little Twig served in the United States Army. He was in the Army from 1917 to 1921. He served overseas during World War I.
In 1922, Little Twig joined the Oorang Indians. This was an All-Indian football team led by the famous athlete Jim Thorpe. The team was based in LaRue, Ohio. Little Twig played with the Oorang Indians for two years.
After the Oorang Indians team stopped playing in 1923, Little Twig and Jim Thorpe moved to a new team. They joined the Rock Island Independents. He played with the Independents during the 1924 and 1925 seasons. Joseph Little Twig finished his NFL career in 1926. He played that year with the Akron Indians and the Canton Bulldogs.
Life After Football
After his football career, Joseph Little Twig joined the Canton Police Department in 1927. He worked as a patrolman, often riding a motorcycle. He left the police force in 1931.
In 1929, Joseph Little Twig married Gertrude Hale. His good friend and former teammate, Jim Thorpe, was the best man at their wedding. Joseph Little Twig passed away on March 6, 1939, in Canton, Ohio.
