Joe Nichols started working on his singing and songwriting skills after meeting record producer Randy Edwards. When he was 19, he signed his first record deal with Intersound Records. His first album, Joe Nichols, came out in 1996. The first song from the album, "Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other", had a little success in Canada. However, the album did not sell well, and he left Intersound.

He then signed a second record deal with Giant Records, but this was also short-lived. After these early record deals, Joe Nichols took various jobs in Nashville. He worked moving furniture, installing cable TV, and even selling steaks door to door.

Finding Success with Man with a Memory

In 1999, Joe Nichols met Brent Rowan, a guitarist in Nashville. Brent helped him get a recording contract with Universal South Records. This label later became Show Dog-Universal Music. In July 2002, his second album, Man with a Memory, was released.

The first song from this album, "The Impossible", became a big hit. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard country charts. Billboard even named it one of the most played country songs of 2003. His first album was re-released that same year with the title Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other.

Man with a Memory brought Joe Nichols a lot of recognition. He won a Top New Male Vocalist award from the Academy of Country Music. The album also received three Grammy Award nominations. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), meaning it sold over a million copies. The second song from the album, "Brokenheartsville", became his first No. 1 hit in 2003. Other songs like "She Only Smokes When She Drinks" and "Cool to Be a Fool" also made it into the Top 20. In 2003, Joe Nichols also received the Horizon Award from the Country Music Association.

More Albums and Hits: Revelation, III, and Real Things

Joe Nichols spent much of 2004 touring with country star Alan Jackson. In June of that year, he released his third studio album, Revelation. This album had two songs that reached the Top Ten: "If Nobody Believed in You" and "What's a Guy Gotta Do". Later in 2004, he also released a Christmas album called A Traditional Christmas.

III was Joe Nichols' fourth album, released in October 2005. Its first song, "Tequila Makes Her ... Fall Off", became his second No. 1 hit. The third song from the album, "The Shape I'm In", was released in July 2010 and reached No. 17.
