Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber was an important German naturalist. He was born on January 17, 1739, in Weißensee, Thuringia, Germany. He passed away on December 10, 1810, in Erlangen, Germany. People often called him J.C.D. von Schreber. He spent his life studying nature, especially animals and plants.

His Life and Work

In 1769, Schreber became a professor at the University of Erlangen. He taught about materia medica, which was the study of how plants and other natural things could be used as medicine.

Studying Animals and Plants

Schreber loved to study animals. In 1774, he started writing a huge set of books. These books were called Die Säugethiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen. This means "The Mammals in Illustrations from Nature with Descriptions".

His books focused on all the different mammals around the world. Many animals were given their first scientific names in these books. He followed the system created by Carl Linnaeus. This system, called the binomial system, gives each animal a two-part scientific name.

From 1791 until he passed away in 1810, Schreber was the president of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. This is a very old and respected science academy in Germany. In 1787, he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He was also chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society in April 1795. He received many awards and honors for his work.

Schreber also wrote about entomology, which is the study of insects. One of his insect books was called Schreberi Novae Species Insectorvm. His large collection of dried plants, known as a herbarium, is still kept safe today. It has been at the Botanische Staatssammlung München since 1813.
