John B. Raymond (Dakota Territory Congressman)

John Baldwin Raymond (born December 5, 1844 – died January 3, 1886) was an important person in early American history. He served as a "Delegate" for the Dakota Territory in the United States House of Representatives. A Delegate is like a representative, but from a territory that isn't yet a full state. Raymond helped speak for the people of Dakota Territory in the U.S. government.

Early Life and War Service

John B. Raymond was born in Lockport, New York, in 1844. When he was about nine years old, in 1853, his family moved to Tazewell County, Illinois.

During the American Civil War, John Raymond joined the Union Army. He was part of the Illinois Thirty-First Regiment. He showed great bravery at the Battle of Vicksburg. Because of his actions there, he was promoted to Captain.

Life After the War

After the Civil War ended, John Raymond moved to Mississippi. He started a newspaper called the Mississippi Pilot in Jackson, Mississippi. This was during a time known as Reconstruction. This period was about rebuilding the Southern states after the war.

Later, he worked as an assistant State treasurer for Mississippi. In 1877, he was chosen to be a United States marshal for the Dakota Territory. A U.S. marshal is a law enforcement officer. His main offices were first in Yankton and later in Fargo.

A Voice for Dakota Territory

John Raymond was a member of the Republican political party. He was elected to represent the Dakota Territory in the United States House of Representatives. He served in this role from March 4, 1883, to March 3, 1885.

He tried to be re-elected in 1884 but was not successful. After his time in politics, he started working in wheat farming. John Baldwin Raymond passed away in Fargo on January 3, 1886. He was buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C..
