John Coughlin (born 1837, died 1912) was a brave American soldier. He fought during the American Civil War. He is famous for receiving the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery in the United States. He earned it for his actions in a battle called Swifts Creek.

John Coughlin was born in Williamstown, Vermont, in 1837. He joined the army in September 1862. He was made a Lieutenant Colonel. He served with the 10th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry regiment. He stayed with his regiment until June 1865.

Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor is the highest military award. It is given for extreme bravery. John Coughlin received this special award. He earned it for his actions on May 9, 1864. This happened during the Battle of Swifts Creek in Virginia. He was honored with the award on August 31, 1893.
