John Duren played for the Georgetown Hoyas alongside his high school teammate, Craig Shelton. He was a key player for the team. In 1979, he achieved a great honor by winning a gold medal with the U.S. basketball team at the 1979 Pan American Games. This was a big moment for him and his country.

During his final year at Georgetown, John Duren received some important awards. He was named to the 1979–80 All-Big East First Team.
