John Hans Krebs (December 17, 1926 – November 10, 2014) was an Israeli-American politician and lawyer. He served two terms as a U.S. Representative for California's 17th congressional district. He represented California from 1975 to 1979.

Early Life and Education

John Krebs was born in 1926 in Berlin, Germany. In 1933, his family moved to British-controlled Palestine. He went to Balfour School and later graduated from Ben Yehuda College in 1945.

As a young man, he joined Haganah. This was a Jewish group that worked to create the country of Israel. In 1946, he moved to America. He became a United States citizen in 1954. He studied at the University of California at Berkeley, graduating in 1950. He then earned a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1957.

John Krebs's Career

After finishing law school, John Krebs became a lawyer in California in 1957. He started his law practice in Fresno in 1958.

He also served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He was a corporal in the infantry and worked as a translator in Germany.

Public Service in Fresno

Before going to Congress, Krebs held several important local roles. From 1965 to 1969, he was a member of the Fresno County Planning Commission. This group helps plan how land is used in the county.

Then, from 1970 to 1974, he served on the Fresno County Board of Supervisors. This board manages the county government. He was also a delegate for the California State Democratic convention in 1966.

Serving in Congress

In 1974, John Krebs was elected to the United States Congress. He ran as a Democrat. He won against Bob Mathias, who had been in Congress for four terms.

Krebs served in the 94th and 995th Congresses. His time in office was from January 3, 1975, to January 3, 1979.

Some people consider John Krebs to be the first Palestinian American in Congress. This is because he grew up in Mandatory Palestine. However, other sources say John E. Sununu was the first.

In 1978, Krebs ran for reelection but did not win. He lost to Charles Pashayan, Jr..

Later Life and Legacy

John Krebs lived in Fresno, California for many years. He passed away on November 10, 2014, in Fresno.

In 2009, a special area in Sequoia National Park was named after him. It is called the John Krebs Wilderness. This honors his work and contributions.
