John Joyce Carter (born June 16, 1842, died January 3, 1917) was an officer from Ireland. He fought bravely in the American Civil War. Carter earned the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery in the United States. He received this award for his actions during the Battle of Antietam in Maryland. This important battle happened on September 17, 1862. Carter was given his award on September 10, 1897.

A Brave Soldier's Life

John Joyce Carter was born in Westport, Ireland, on June 16, 1842. When he was about three years old, his family moved to the United States in 1845.

Joining the Army

In May 1861, Carter joined the army. He became part of the 33rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He joined in a town called Nunda, New York. In June 1862, he became a Second Lieutenant.

Medal of Honor Hero

Carter showed great courage during the Battle of Antietam. This battle was a very important and bloody fight in the American Civil War. Because of his bravery, he was later awarded the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award a soldier can receive for bravery.

After the Battle

After his brave actions, Carter left the 33rd New York Infantry in June 1863. He was a regular citizen for a short time. But he soon returned to the army. In October 1863, he became a Captain in the 1st New York Veteran Cavalry. He served until July 1865, when the war ended.

Life After the War

After the American Civil War, John Carter lived in Pennsylvania. He started different businesses. He owned a clothing store in Titusville, Pennsylvania. He also started an oil company called Carter Oil. This company later became a very famous one, known as Exxon.

His Final Rest

John Carter passed away on January 3, 1917. He was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Titusville, Pennsylvania.
