John Vernard Johnson was born on May 8, 1968, in LaGrange, Georgia. He went to LaGrange High School. After high school, he played college football for the Clemson Tigers. He was a key player for Clemson from 1987 to 1990. During his time there, he was recognized as one of the best players in the ACC. He was named second-team All-ACC in both 1989 and 1990.

John Johnson was picked by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft. He was the 53rd player chosen overall. He officially joined the 49ers on July 10, 1991.
Playing for the San Francisco 49ers
In his first year, 1991, John Johnson played in nine games for the 49ers. He made five tackles before he had to stop playing due to an injury in November. After that season, he became a free agent but then signed again with the 49ers.
In 1992, Johnson played in all 16 games, starting two of them. He had 19 tackles, one sack, and one interception. His interception was special because he ran it back 56 yards for a touchdown! He also played in two playoff games that year.
