John Mara officially joined the New York Giants in 1991. At first, he was the team's main lawyer. Later, he became an executive vice president and chief operating officer. This meant he helped manage many parts of the team's daily business.

In 2005, after his father Wellington Mara passed away, John took over as the team's president.

Building a New Stadium

John Mara worked closely with Steve Tisch, another co-owner, to plan and build MetLife Stadium. This huge stadium opened in 2010 and is where the Giants play their home games. It was a big project that needed a lot of planning and talks.

Super Bowl Wins

Under the leadership of John Mara and Steve Tisch, the New York Giants achieved great success. They won two Super Bowl championships! They won Super Bowl XLII and later Super Bowl XLVI. These were exciting times for the team and their fans.

Working for the NFL

John Mara doesn't just work for the Giants. He also helps the entire NFL. For 15 years, he has been part of the NFL Competition Committee. This group suggests new rules and changes for all NFL teams.

He is also the current chairman of the NFL Management Council Executive Committee. This role means he helps with important talks about agreements between the league and its players. He played a key part in making new agreements in 2011 and 2020.

In 2014, John Mara, along with Steve Tisch and Woody Johnson, helped bring Super Bowl XLVIII to MetLife Stadium. This was a big event for the New York area.

Family and Community

John Mara is the third generation of his family to own the New York Giants. His grandfather, Tim Mara, started the team way back in 1925. When Tim passed away in 1959, his sons, Wellington (John's father) and Jack Mara (John's uncle), took over the team.

The Giants are one of the few NFL teams that have stayed in the same family for a very long time. Only the Chicago Bears have been owned by one family for even longer.

John Mara is married to Denise W. Mara. They have five children: one son named John Jr., and four daughters named Lauren, Courtney, Christine, and Erin. You might know his nieces, Rooney Mara and Kate Mara, who are both actresses.

John Mara also helps out in his community. He is on the board of directors for Saint Vincent's Hospital in Harrison, New York. He also helps with an organization called Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York, which supports young people.
