John Michael McHugh (born in 1948) is an American politician. He is best known for serving as the 21st United States Secretary of the Army. Before that, he was a representative for New York in the United States House of Representatives.

Becoming Secretary of the Army
In 2009, President Barack Obama chose John McHugh to be the United States Secretary of the Army. This is a very important job where he would lead the civilian side of the U.S. Army.
The United States Senate had to agree with President Obama's choice. They confirmed McHugh for the role on September 16, 2009. He officially started his job as the 21st Secretary of the Army on September 21, 2009. He held this position until November 1, 2015.

John McHugh was born on September 29, 1948, in Watertown, New York. He grew up and went to school there.
He went to Utica College and earned a bachelor's degree. Later, he continued his studies at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany, where he earned a master's degree in public administration. This education helped him prepare for a career in government and public service.
