From 1983 to 1994, he was a journalist in New York City. Then, from 1994 to 1995, he was the main spokesperson for the NYPD.

In 1995, Miller joined ABC News. He even interviewed Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan in 1998. Later, from 2003 to 2011, he returned to police work. He became a senior official in the LAPD and an Assistant Director for Public Affairs at the FBI.

Miller became a senior correspondent for CBS News in 2011. He later rejoined the NYPD as the Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence & Counterterrorism from 2013 to 2022. After leaving the NYPD, he started working as a chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst for CNN.

Early life and interests

John Miller is the son of Lucinda and John J. Miller. His father was a writer who had many different jobs. He wrote about Hollywood, reported from other countries, reviewed Broadway shows, and investigated crimes.

Miller's father was also friends with Frank Costello, whose wife was Miller's godmother.

Miller grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. He went to Montclair High School. There, he became interested in news and reporting. He would take photos to sell to newspapers and sometimes skip school to attend press briefings.

Career journey

Miller started his career as a journalist in 1983. He worked for WNEW, a TV station in New York City. From 1985 to 1994, he was an investigative journalist for WNBC, another New York TV station. During this time, he interviewed John Gotti several times.

Working with the NYPD

From 1994 to 1995, Miller became the main spokesperson for the NYPD. He was the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. He was hired by Commissioner William Bratton.

Reporting for ABC News

Miller went back to journalism in 1995, working for ABC News. In May 1998, he arranged an interview with Osama bin Laden. Miller traveled to Islamabad, Pakistan, and then was taken across the border to meet bin Laden near Kandahar.

During the interview, Miller asked questions that were translated into Arabic. Bin Laden's answers were not translated right away, so Miller didn't know what he was saying until later.

While at ABC, Miller also covered the September 11, 2001 attacks. He listened to radio conversations from the FBI, the fire department, and the NYPD. He shared this information with Peter Jennings and the viewers.

In January 2002, Miller became a co-anchor with Barbara Walters on the ABC News show 20/20.

Roles in law enforcement

In January 2003, Miller left ABC News to work with William Bratton again. Bratton was then with the Los Angeles Police Department. Miller became the Bureau Chief for the Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau. This group handled major crimes and emergency services.

While there, Miller started Project Archangel. This project helped cities and states check for possible terrorist targets. Miller also helped design the Los Angeles Joint Regional Intelligence Center (JRIC). This center combines information for the LAPD, LA sheriff, and the FBI.

In September 2005, Miller became the Assistant Director for Public Affairs at the FBI in Washington, D.C.. He was in charge of how the FBI communicated with the public and the news. He also helped improve communication with the FBI's 31,000 employees.

Miller also worked on a team to set standards for intelligence operations. This system was similar to the CompStat process used by police departments. It was overseen by then-FBI Director Robert Mueller.

Back to news and NYPD

Miller left the FBI to become a senior correspondent for CBS News on October 17, 2011. He reported for all CBS News shows, including CBS This Morning and sometimes 60 Minutes.

In December 2013, Miller left CBS to return to the NYPD. He became the Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence & Counterterrorism. He rejoined William Bratton, who was the new NYPD Commissioner. Miller retired from the NYPD at the end of July 2022.

In September 2022, Miller started working at CNN as their chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst.
