Miller has also held important roles in law enforcement, including serving with the New York Police Department (NYPD), the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Early Life and Education

John Miller grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. His father, John J. Miller, was a writer who covered many different topics. These included Hollywood news, international stories, and politics. John Miller's godmother was Lauretta, who was married to Frank Costello, a well-known figure.

While attending Montclair High School, Miller became very interested in news. He would take photos to sell to newspapers and even skipped school sometimes to attend press briefings. This early interest helped him decide on his future career.

Career in Journalism and Law Enforcement

John Miller has had a unique career, switching between reporting the news and working in law enforcement.

Early Journalism Career

Miller started his career as a journalist in 1983. He worked for WNEW, a television station in New York City. From 1985 to 1994, he was an investigative journalist for WNBC, another New York TV station. During this time, he interviewed John Gotti several times.

First Role at NYPD

From 1994 to 1995, Miller took a break from journalism. He became the chief spokesman for the NYPD, serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. He was hired for this role by Commissioner William Bratton.

Return to News Reporting

In 1995, Miller went back to journalism and joined ABC News. A notable moment in his career was in 1998 when he interviewed Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. Miller traveled to Islamabad, Pakistan, and was taken across the border to meet bin Laden near Kandahar.

While at ABC, Miller also covered the September 11, 2001 attacks. He reported live, listening to radio conversations from the FBI, the fire department, and the NYPD. In January 2002, he became a co-anchor with Barbara Walters on the ABC News show 20/20.

Roles in Law Enforcement Agencies

In January 2003, Miller left ABC News to work with Commissioner Bratton again. This time, Bratton was with the Los Angeles Police Department. Miller became the Bureau Chief for the Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau. In this role, he helped create systems to assess risks from potential terrorist targets. He also helped design the Los Angeles Joint Regional Intelligence Center (JRIC), which combines information for the LAPD, LA sheriff, and the FBI.

In September 2005, Miller moved to Washington, D.C. to become the Assistant Director for Public Affairs at the FBI. He was in charge of how the FBI communicated with the public and the news media. He also helped improve communication within the FBI for its many employees.

Back to News and NYPD

Miller left the FBI in October 2011 to become a senior correspondent for CBS News. He reported for various CBS News programs, including CBS This Morning.

In December 2013, Miller resigned from CBS to rejoin the NYPD. He became the Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence & Counterterrorism, working again with William Bratton, who was the new NYPD Commissioner. Miller retired from the NYPD in July 2022.

In September 2022, Miller joined CNN as their chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst.
