John Nieto (1936–2018) was a famous American artist. He created art that focused on Native American people and their cultures. He also painted pictures of animals native to the land. John Nieto lived for a long time in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

About John Nieto's Life
John Wesley Nieto was born in Denver, Colorado. He was the third oldest of 14 children. His mother, Natalia Venegas Nieto, had Mescalero Apache and Hispanic family roots. His father, Simon Nieto, worked for the U.S. Office of Censorship during World War II. Later, his father became a Methodist minister.
Nieto's family history goes back over 300 years. His artworks often showed his Hispanic and American Indian heritage. He studied art at Southern Methodist University. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1959.
John Nieto's Art and Awards
John Nieto's paintings gained a lot of attention. One of his famous paintings was called “Delegate to the White House.” He gave this painting to President Reagan. It hung in the Oval Office at the White House while President Reagan was in office. Later, it became part of the presidential library.
In 2002, another one of his paintings was installed. This painting, called Buffalo Dancer, was placed in the Great Hall of the Albuquerque International Sunport.
Awards and Recognition
In 1994, John Nieto received a special honor. He got the New Mexico Governor's Award for Achievement in the Arts. This award recognized his great work as an artist.
He also helped guide important art organizations. He served on the advisory boards for the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. He also advised the Native American Preparatory School.
Nieto's art is displayed in many important places. The New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe has his work.
