John William Oates, born on April 7, 1948, is an American musician. He is famous for being half of the music duo Hall & Oates, with Daryl Hall. John plays guitar, sings, writes songs, and produces music. He is known for rock, R&B, and soul music.

John Oates is mainly a guitarist for Hall & Oates. But he also helped write many of their biggest hits. These include "Sara Smile", "She's Gone", and "Out of Touch". He also helped write "You Make My Dreams", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", and "Maneater".

He sang lead vocals on several songs that made it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart. These include "How Does It Feel to Be Back" and "Possession Obsession". In 2004, Oates was added to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2014, he joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Hall & Oates. His book, Change of Seasons, came out in 2017.

Early Life and Education

John Oates was born in New York City on April 7, 1948. His mother was Italian, and his father was from Gibraltar. His family moved to North Wales, Pennsylvania, where he grew up.

He went to North Penn High School in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. He was a co-captain of the wrestling team in his senior year. John chose to go to Temple University in Philadelphia instead of taking wrestling scholarships. He wrestled for a short time at Temple before focusing on music.

Music Career Highlights

In 1966, John Oates recorded his first song, "I Need Your Love". He was part of a group called The Masters. After high school, he went to Temple University. There, he met Daryl Hall, who was also a musician.

They formed the duo Hall & Oates and signed with Atlantic Records in 1972. Hall & Oates have released 21 albums. They have sold over 80 million records worldwide. This makes them one of the most successful music duos ever.

They had ten number-one songs and more than 20 Top 40 hits. They have toured around the world for many years. In 1985, they took part in the Live Aid concert. They also helped with the charity song "We Are the World". These events made them even more famous. Many modern bands say Hall & Oates influenced their music.

Even after many years of success with Hall & Oates, John Oates did not release a solo album until 2002. This album was called Phunk Shui. In 2004, he worked with Jamie Cullum on the song "Greatest Mistake". This song was on the album White People.

His second solo album, 1000 Miles of Life, came out in 2008. In 2011, a song he co-wrote, "Let the Rain", became a hit for Margo Rey. John Oates released a new song, "Stand Strong", in 2013. This song was part of a series of digital singles called Good Road to Follow.

In 2015, he released Another Good Road. This was a DVD and live CD. It also aired as a TV special on the Palladia music channel. The DVD was filmed live in Nashville, Tennessee.
