In 1867, the people of Cumberland County chose John Robinson to be their representative at the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1868. This was a big meeting where leaders decided on new laws for Virginia after the American Civil War. Robinson was a member of the Republican Party. He was the only person from Cumberland County elected to this important convention.

Starting in 1869, voters from Cumberland and nearby counties elected Robinson to the Senate of Virginia. He served two terms. His district included Amelia and Nottoway Counties. After the 1870 U.S. census, the district boundaries changed. Prince Edward County became part of his district instead of Nottoway County.
