John Tuomey was born in Tralee, a town in Ireland, in 1954. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Dundalk.

After college, John Tuomey worked with a company called Stirling Wilford & Associates. He helped design important buildings like the Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany.
