In September 1861, Clark became a regimental quartermaster. This job meant he was in charge of supplies for his army unit. He made sure soldiers had food, clothing, and equipment. At first, he held the rank of a first lieutenant.

Clark served with the 6th Vermont Infantry. This was a group of soldiers from his home state. They played an important role in many battles.
