John Whetton, born on September 6, 1941, is a British athlete who used to run middle-distance races. He is famous for winning a gold medal in the 1500 metres race at the 1969 European Athletics Championships. He also reached the final of the 1500 metres at the Olympic Games in both 1964 and 1968.

John Whetton's Running Career
John Whetton started his running journey with a local club called Sutton-in-Ashfield Harriers. One of his first big wins was a gold medal in the 1500 metres at the 1963 Summer Universiade in Brazil.
Olympic Games Appearances
In 1964, John Whetton was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. He was one of three British runners in the 1500 metres race. John did very well, making it through the first heat and then the semi-finals. He qualified for the final as the fastest runner who didn't automatically qualify. In the final race, he finished eighth.
John Whetton again represented Great Britain at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. The high altitude there made running harder for many athletes. Despite this, John once again qualified for the 1500 metres final. He finished fifth in this race.
European Championships Success
In 1966, John Whetton took part in the 1966 European Indoor Games. He won his first major gold medal there, finishing almost three seconds ahead of the second-place runner. John was very good at indoor races. He managed to win the European Indoor title for the next two years as well, in Prague and Madrid.
His last major medal came at the 1969 European Athletics Championships in Athens. He won the 1500 metres race in a very close finish, beating Francis Murphy from Ireland to take the gold medal.
Commonwealth Games
John Whetton also represented England in the 1,500 metres race at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.
