He played first-class cricket for All-India while he was serving in British India. Wyndham was a soldier in the Wiltshire Regiment from 1890 to 1923. During his time in the army, he fought in two major conflicts: the Second Boer War and the First World War.
Life and Military Service
John Reginald Wyndham was born in April 1870 in Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire. He went to the Royal Military College, which is a famous army training school. In March 1890, he joined the Wiltshire Regiment as a second lieutenant. This was his first rank in the army.
He was promoted to lieutenant in March 1892. While he was serving in British India in January 1893, he played his first important cricket match. He played for a team called All-India against a visiting team known as Lord Hawke's XI. This match took place in Allahabad. In the game, he scored 8 runs in the first innings and 20 runs in the second innings.
After returning to England, he started playing for his home county, Wiltshire. He played in the minor counties cricket championship starting in 1896.
Wyndham continued to rise through the army ranks. He became a captain in October 1898. Soon after, he served in the Second Boer War, a conflict in South Africa. After this war, he played two more matches for Wiltshire in 1903.
In May 1908, he was promoted to major. He then served in the First World War, which was a very large global conflict. During this war, he was captured by the enemy and became a prisoner of war. After the war, his service and time as a prisoner were recognized.
He reached the rank of lieutenant colonel in August 1918. He officially retired from the army in March 1923. John Reginald Wyndham passed away in March 1933 in Wallingford, Berkshire.
