John de Mowbray, 3rd Baron Mowbray (born 29 November 1310 – died 4 October 1361) was an important English noble. He was the only son of John de Mowbray, 2nd Baron Mowbray, and his first wife, Aline de Brewes. John was born in Hovingham, a place in Yorkshire, England.
Life as a Baron
John's father, the 2nd Baron Mowbray, faced trouble with King Edward II. He joined a rebellion led by Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster. After the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322, John's father was captured and later executed in York. His family's lands were taken away by the King.
Young John and his mother were then sent to prison in the Tower of London. They stayed there until 1327. That year, King Edward II was removed from power by his wife, Queen Isabella, and a powerful noble named Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March. After this, John and his mother were finally set free.
John de Mowbray became a favorite of the new king, Edward III. He traveled to France and took part in important battles during the War of the Breton Succession. He was present at the sieges of Nantes and Aguillon. John also fought for England in the Second War of Scottish Independence. He was on the English side during the famous Battle of Neville's Cross.
Sadly, John de Mowbray died from the plague in York on 4 October 1361. He was 50 years old. He was buried in Bedford, at a place called the Friars Minor.
Marriages and Children
John de Mowbray married three times during his life.
His first marriage was to Maud de Holand. This marriage happened before 1322, but it was later declared invalid, meaning it was cancelled.
He then married Joan of Lancaster between 1327 and 1328. Joan was the youngest daughter of Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster, making her a very important connection. John and Joan had three children together:
- John de Mowbray, 4th Baron Mowbray: He became the next Baron Mowbray after his father.
- Blanche Mowbray: She married several times but did not have any children.
- Eleanor Mowbray: She married Roger la Warr, 3rd Baron De La Warr, and they had a daughter named Joan. Eleanor later married Sir Lewis Clifford.
After Joan of Lancaster passed away, John married for a third time. In 1351, he married Elizabeth de Vere. Elizabeth was the daughter of John de Vere, 7th Earl of Oxford. After John de Mowbray's death, Elizabeth married again to Sir William de Cossington.
