He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys. Johnny also played college football at Alabama State University. Early Life and High School
Johnny Huggins grew up in Zachary, Louisiana. He went to Northeast High School. There, he was a talented athlete who played three different sports. He was named "All-state" in basketball. This means he was one of the best players in the whole state. He also earned "All-district" honors in football.
College Football Journey
After high school, Johnny received a football scholarship. He decided to play for Alabama State University. In his first year, he caught 6 passes for 94 yards. The next year, he played both quarterback and tight end. He caught 8 passes for 94 yards and scored one touchdown. As a quarterback, he completed 25 passes for 395 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also scored one rushing touchdown.
In his third year, he caught 15 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown. During his senior year in 1998, Johnny had a great season. He caught 42 passes for 506 yards. This was the second-highest on his team. He also scored 6 touchdowns. Because of his excellent performance, he was named First-team All-SWAC.
Professional Football Career
Johnny Huggins started his professional career in the XFL. He was chosen by the Las Vegas Outlaws in the XFL Draft. He played for them during the 2001 season.
Joining the NFL
On February 7, 2001, the Dallas Cowboys signed Johnny. He joined them as an undrafted free agent. This means he was not chosen in the main NFL draft. The Cowboys sent him to NFL Europe to play for the Rhein Fire. There, he caught 16 passes for 167 yards. He also helped his team's running back, Pepe Pearson, have a great season.
In the 2001 NFL season, Johnny played in ten games for the Cowboys. He started in two of those games. He caught 8 passes for 36 yards during that season.
Moving to the Texans
In 2002, the Houston Texans picked Johnny in the 2002 NFL expansion draft. This draft happens when a new team joins the league. However, the Texans released him on May 20, 2002.
Johnny signed with the Cowboys again on June 1, 2002. But he was released by the team on August 11 of the same year.
