Joliet Regional Airport (JOT) is a public airport in Joliet, Illinois. It is about four nautical miles (7 km) west of downtown Joliet. This airport is owned by the Joliet Park District.
The airport is also about 37 miles (60 kilometers) southwest of Chicago. It first opened its doors in April 1930.
Airport History
Joliet's first airport was originally called Joliet Municipal Airport. An Illinois Senator named Richard Barr suggested building it in the mid-1920s. The airport was special because it was operated by the Joliet Park District. This made it the first airport in the country run by a park district.
The land for the airport was bought in September 1928. The United States Department of Commerce helped with its construction. The airport officially opened in September 1930. The opening event included an aerobatics show, where planes performed cool tricks.
The Park District even moved their main office to the airport. Most of the airport's flights moved to a new airfield in 1940. However, a radio transmitter at the old airport still works today. The old airport's hangar building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's an important historical building.
What's at the Airport?
Joliet Regional Airport covers an area of about 178 acres (72 hectares). It sits at an elevation of 581 feet (177 meters) above sea level.
The airport has two runways for planes to take off and land:
- One runway is 2,937 feet (895 meters) long and 100 feet (30 meters) wide. It has an asphalt surface, which is like a paved road.
- The other runway is 2,746 feet (837 meters) long and 150 feet (45 meters) wide. It has a turf surface, meaning it's covered in grass.
In one recent year, the airport had 25,000 aircraft operations. This means planes took off or landed about 68 times each day. Most of these operations (89%) were for general aviation. This includes private planes and small charter flights. About 8% were air taxi flights, and 3% were military flights.
At that time, 114 aircraft were based at this airport. This means these planes called Joliet Regional Airport their home. Most of them (91%) were single-engine planes. A smaller number (6%) had multiple engines, and 3% were helicopters.
