Jonah's Early Life and School Years
Jonah Bolden was born in Melbourne, Australia. His father, Bruce Bolden, was American and played professional basketball. His mother, Marie Yacoub, is Egyptian. Jonah grew up in Sydney, Australia. He started playing basketball at age five for the Bankstown Bruins.
As a teenager, he went to Homebush Boys High School. He was chosen to play for his home state, New South Wales, in 2013. This was for the Basketball Australia Under 18 National Championships. Jonah led his team to the national final. He averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds per game. His great performance led to him being chosen for the Australian team. He was the youngest player to represent Australia at the 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championship.
In August 2013, Jonah moved to the United States. He played his senior year at Findlay College Prep in Henderson, Nevada. This school is near Las Vegas. However, his high school eligibility ended after one semester. He then moved to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.
In December 2013, Jonah decided to play college basketball at UCLA. He chose UCLA over other big schools like Louisville and Kentucky. Experts rated him as a top player in his class. He was seen as one of the best power forward players.
Playing Basketball in College
Jonah Bolden had to sit out his first year at UCLA. This was in the 2014–15 season. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) said he was a "partial qualifier." This was because he transferred from Australia after his senior year of high school had already started. In January 2015, the NCAA allowed him to practice with the UCLA team. In May, he had surgery on his right knee. He had a torn meniscus, which is a type of knee injury.
Jonah is 6 feet 10 inches tall. He can play both guard and forward positions. In the 2015–16 season, he was expected to replace two players who went to the NBA. However, his college debut was delayed. He missed UCLA's first game because he broke some team rules.
He played his first game after that. He scored 11 points and had five rebounds. This helped UCLA win 88–83. On December 12, Jonah played 30 minutes. He scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds. This was his first "double-double" (double digits in two stats) in a win against Gonzaga. He helped guard a strong player from the other team.
Jonah became UCLA's best player coming off the bench. But his scoring was not a big part of his game. UCLA's defense was struggling. So, his coach, Steve Alford, put Jonah in the starting lineup as a power forward. This helped the team win a game by a large margin. On February 14, 2016, he scored a career-high 16 points. He also had nine rebounds in a win against Arizona State.
UCLA finished the season with a 15–17 record. Jonah started 11 games. He averaged 4.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He also had 27 blocks, which was third-highest on the team.
Jonah felt he wasn't used enough in his first season. He decided to leave college early to play professionally. He still had two years of college eligibility left.
