Jonathan Raphael Cohen is an American diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. He most recently worked as the United States Ambassador to Egypt. He held this important job from November 17, 2019, to March 31, 2022.
Before that, he was the United States Deputy Representative to the United Nations. The United Nations is an organization where countries work together on global issues. From 2016 to 2018, he also served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. This role involved working with countries in Europe and Asia.
President Donald Trump chose him for the Deputy Representative role in 2018. The Senate agreed to his appointment without any objections. On January 1, 2019, Cohen became the acting Ambassador to the United Nations. He took over after Nikki Haley left the position. He continued in this acting role until Kelly Craft became the new Ambassador in September 2019.
In April 2019, President Trump nominated Cohen to be the Ambassador to Egypt. The Senate confirmed his nomination in August. He officially started his duties in Egypt on November 17, 2019.

Early Life and Education
Jonathan Cohen grew up in Northern California with his younger brother, Sascha. His parents were Harry B. Cohen and Adrienne M. Cohen. His father was a psychologist who worked at Stanford University. Later, his father joined the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He also directed mental health services for Orange County, California.
In 1985, Jonathan Cohen earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Princeton University. He studied politics there. For his final project, he wrote about ways to achieve peace in the Middle East. After Princeton, Cohen continued his studies. He attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and later Georgetown University.
Jonathan's Career as a Diplomat
Jonathan Cohen began his career as a diplomat in 1986. He joined the Foreign Service Institute, which trains people to work for the U.S. government in other countries. He has held many different diplomatic jobs around the world.
Working in Embassies
Cohen served as a Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 2008 to 2011. He was also a Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Paris from 2011 to 2013. From 2013 to 2016, he worked as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. He also worked in other U.S. embassies or consulates in places like Bangkok, Jerusalem, Vienna, Stockholm, Ankara, and Rome.
In August 2016, he became a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. In this role, he focused on relations with Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey. He met with important leaders and discussed how the U.S. could work with Turkey. The goal was to reduce the influence of Iran and Russia in that region.
Representing the U.S. at the United Nations
On February 13, 2018, President Donald Trump officially nominated Cohen for a new role. He was chosen to be the Deputy Representative of the United States to the United Nations. The Senate approved his nomination on May 24, 2018. He was sworn in on June 8, 2018.
On January 1, 2019, Cohen became the acting Ambassador to the United Nations. He took over after Nikki Haley resigned. He held this important position until Ambassador Kelly Craft took over later that year.
Ambassador to Egypt
On April 11, 2019, President Trump nominated Cohen to be the Ambassador of the United States to Egypt. The Senate confirmed his nomination on August 1, 2019. He arrived in Egypt on November 17, 2019, and officially began his duties as Ambassador.
Personal Life
Jonathan Cohen is fluent in several languages. He speaks French, Swedish, and Italian.
