Jonathan Raphael Cohen is an American diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. He recently served as the United States Ambassador to Egypt. This means he was the top U.S. representative in Egypt. He held this important role from November 2019 to March 2022.
Before that, he was the United States Deputy Representative to the United Nations. The United Nations is an organization where countries work together on global issues. From 2016 to 2018, he also worked as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. In this role, he helped manage U.S. relations with countries in Europe and Eurasia.
President Donald Trump chose Cohen for the Deputy Representative role in 2018. The Senate (a part of the U.S. government) agreed to his appointment. In early 2019, he briefly became the acting Ambassador to the United Nations. He took over after Nikki Haley left the position. He continued in this acting role until Kelly Craft became the new Ambassador.
In April 2019, President Trump nominated Cohen to be the Ambassador to Egypt. The Senate approved his nomination in August 2019. He officially started his duties in Egypt on November 17, 2019.
Early Life and Education
Jonathan Cohen was born to Harry B. Cohen and Adrienne M. Cohen. He and his younger brother, Sascha, grew up in Northern California. Their father was a psychologist who worked at Stanford University. He later taught at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. Harry Cohen also directed mental health services for Orange County, California.
In 1985, Jonathan Cohen graduated from Princeton University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics. For his senior project, he wrote about peace efforts in the Middle East. After Princeton, he studied in Jerusalem, Israel, and at Georgetown University.
Diplomatic Career
Jonathan Cohen began his career as a diplomat in 1986. He joined the Foreign Service Institute, which trains U.S. diplomats. He has worked in many different countries around the world.
Some of his important roles include:
- Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus (2008-2011).
- Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France (2011-2013).
- Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq (2013-2016).
He also served in U.S. embassies or consulates in Bangkok, Jerusalem, Vienna, Stockholm, Ankara, and Rome.
In August 2016, he became a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. In this job, he focused on relations with Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey. He worked to strengthen U.S. ties in the region.
On February 13, 2018, President Donald Trump officially nominated Cohen for a new role. He was chosen to be the Deputy Representative of the United States to the United Nations. The Senate confirmed his nomination on May 24, 2018. This means all senators agreed to his appointment. He was sworn into office on June 8, 2018.
On January 1, 2019, Cohen became the acting Ambassador to the United Nations. He took over after Nikki Haley resigned. He held this position until Kelly Craft became the new Ambassador in September 2019.
On April 11, 2019, President Trump nominated Cohen to be the Ambassador of the United States to Egypt. The Senate confirmed his nomination on August 1, 2019. He arrived in Egypt and officially started his duties on November 17, 2019. He completed his service as Ambassador to Egypt on March 31, 2022.
