Carex jonesii is a type of plant called a sedge. Its common name is Jones' sedge. Sedges look a lot like grasses, but they are different plants. This plant is known for growing in wet, mountain areas.

Where Jones' Sedge Grows

This sedge is found in the Western United States. You can find it from California all the way to Montana and Colorado. It loves to grow in wet places. You will often see it in subalpine mountain areas. These are places high up in the mountains, just below the tree line.

What Jones' Sedge Looks Like

Carex jonesii grows in clumps. Its stems can reach about 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) tall. Around the bottom of the stems, you might see old leaves from last year. New green leaves grow in tufts from the plant's base.

The plant has a dense group of flowers called an inflorescence. This flower cluster is about one or two centimeters long. It has a mix of gold and black flowers that look like scales.
