Jones is a small town located in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. It was named after Charles G. Jones, who was the mayor of Oklahoma City three times. In 2010, about 2,692 people lived there.

History of Jones

How Jones Started

Jones was planned as a town on April 22, 1898. This happened before a railroad line was built from Sapulpa to Oklahoma City. A man named Luther F. Aldrich created the town.

He named it after his friend and business partner, Charles G. Jones. Charles G. Jones was known as "Gristmill" and served as mayor of Oklahoma City three times. Later, Charles G. Jones even named his oldest son Luther, after his friend.

Jones is located just south of a place that Washington Irving wrote about. In his 1835 book, A Tour on the Prairies, he called it "The Ringing of Horses."

The town of Jones officially became a city on January 4, 1909. By 1910, only 163 people lived there.

Big Events in Jones

In December 2007, a very bad ice storm hit much of Oklahoma. This storm caused a fire at Jones High School, and the building burned down completely.

A brand new school was finished in 2010. It took three years to build. The new school has a large common area and a theater for the drama club.

Earthquakes Near Jones

Jones has experienced several earthquakes. Here are some of the notable ones:

  • On August 27, 2009, there were six earthquakes. The strongest one was a 3.7 magnitude quake at 9:09 PM Central Standard Time.
  • On January 15, 2010, four more earthquakes happened. The strongest was a 4.0 magnitude quake at 9:25 AM Central Standard Time.
  • On January 24, 2010, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake hit Jones at 1:15 AM Central Standard Time.
  • On February 27, 2010, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck east of Oklahoma City at 4:22 PM Central Standard Time. A smaller 3.1 magnitude quake happened the day before.
  • On October 13, 2010, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit about 10 miles (16 km) east of Norman at 9:06 AM.

Jones is located in the Cross Timbers ecoregion. This area is known for its mix of forests and grasslands. It is also part of the Frontier Country tourism region, which means it's a place where people visit for its history and natural beauty.
