History of Joppa Village
In the early 1800s, the area where Joppa now stands was a busy spot called Copeland's Landing. It was a place where riverboats could stop.
Around the 1870s, two local men, A.J. Kuykendall and Jesse Baccus, decided to create a town. They named it Joppa after an old city in the Bible, which is now in modern Israel.
When the railroad arrived in 1900, Joppa became a very important place. It was a "transloading station," meaning goods could be easily moved from riverboats to trains and vice versa. This helped the village grow for several years. Joppa officially became a village in 1901.
Over time, Joppa's population has become smaller. Today, it has a school and a few hundred residents.
