Jordan is a small town in Montana, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Garfield County. In 2020, about 356 people lived there. Jordan is the only official town in Garfield County.

History of Jordan

Jordan was started in 1896. A man named Arthur Jordan liked hunting in the area. He decided to settle there with his family. They built their home near the Big Dry Creek.

A post office opened in Jordan on July 11, 1899. Soon, a town grew around it. There were places like saloons, hotels, and stores. In the late 1910s, many people moved to Garfield County to start farms. This area was then part of Dawson County.

By 1919, people decided to create their own county. This new county was named Garfield County. Jordan was chosen as the county seat by a vote. This meant it became the main town for the county government. Jordan officially became a town in 1951.

In 1996, a long event happened near Jordan. It involved a group called the Montana Freemen and federal officers. This event lasted for 81 days.

Geography and Location

Jordan is located in the state of Montana. Two main roads, Montana Highway 59 and Montana Highway 200, meet just south of the town. Fort Peck Lake, a very large lake, is also nearby.
